November Newsletter: Ordinances
Hello Turtle River Township Residents,
This is Jerry Illies, proud to be one of your township supervisors. This month I wanted to bring up ordinances. For a lot of us this is a dirty word, but I want to give you a new perspective on what these regulations do for us. Yes, they do regulate ways that we interact with our land, but more importantly they regulate how external entities might move in to exploit our township or its residents.
For instance, if a business moves in to exploit one of our township resources, a resident who lives nearby may not have the resources to fight abuses from that operation. Regulations keep that company from operating heavy equipment late at night, creating dust clouds that might affect nearby land, diverting waterways that are enjoyed by you and your neighbors, creating health hazards, etc.
The township is you and me, and together we can pool our tax dollars and use that to have the legal power to force more powerful entities to be considerate of us and our neighbors. In so doing it becomes one of the purposes of our ordinances to protect our residents as much as it is to regulate our own land use.
You can find our ordinances on our website at turtlerivertownship.com, and then under “Documents and Links," and finally “Turtle River Township Planning Ordinance." Or if you have any questions/concerns you can send me an email to turtleriversup@gmail.com. You can also just send a text or give me a call directly at 218-368-7550.
